Helping the City of La Habra reimagine its streets

Steer Davies Gleave is working with the City of La Habra, through the support of St. Jude Medical Center, to develop a Complete Streets Master Plan which aims to ultimately contribute to the long-term well-being of the communities within the city. The plan responds to state-level policy AB 1358 Complete Streets Act of 2008, which encourages cities to improve streets to accommodate all users, and is underpinned by the foundation set out in the Orange County Council of Governments Complete Streets Initiative Design Handbook which Steer Davies Gleave completed in 2016.

The community, local stakeholders and existing plans outlining city vision all identify a clear need for safer and more people-oriented streets in La Habra. Promoting healthy and active living is a key focus for stakeholders. City residents are concerned about local school aged children who are considered at high health risk due to body composition, heavy and fast-moving traffic on arterials and neighborhood streets that pose safety threats, and a lack of local family destinations.

The team is developing a set of context-appropriate street design interventions for La Habra drawn from extensive community outreach and a thorough examination of local context combined with a layered network approach. The Master Plan will ultimately facilitate active transportation and a network of streets that are safer and oriented towards people.
