An excellent turnout of attendees joined a high-profile panel of experts at One King West Hotel in Toronto, sharing an insightful discussion on how to justify investments through business case, benefits analyses and how a transit-centered approach can enhance city planning.

With major city regions seeing rapid population growth and economic development, how can city and regional leaders plan and deliver mobility solutions that will ensure livability and prosperity?

Transportation investment can act as a catalyst to economic development and the creation of new housing and employment centers but can also require significant funding and time. Agencies and regions planning for transit investment need to understand the wider case for investment from plan to platform to passenger, to ensure that projects are developed and implemented in a way that catalyzes regional development and addresses broader challenges such as the availability and affordability of housing and environmental sustainability.

Mike Goggin, UK Managing Director at Steer, chaired the panel and was joined by Peter Rogoff, CEO for Sound Transit; Joshua Engel-Yan, Principal Sponsor (A) for Metrolinx, Laurie Lombardi, Interim Chief Planning Officer for LA Metro and Kevin Desmond, CEO for Translink. These four eminent speakers provided stimulating and varying perspectives across a diverse array of regions, cities and transportation systems, each with their unique challenges and approaches to addressing the wider case for transit investment.
